Building Your Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is generally a collection of essential items of clothing, that can be paired with seasonal pieces.

I don’t know many woman who could manage off of just one main capsule wardrobe - I definitely wouldn’t, not with my ever changing style personalities.

To be practical, especially in SA with our extreme weather changes, I’d suggest having 2 capsule wardrobes one for Autumn/Winter and another for Spring/Summer.

Quick Guide to Building Your First Capsule Wardrobe

Quick declutter - getting rid of clothes that don't fit, are worn out and aren't your style

1. Decide on your lifestyle categories - select 3 outfit categories that best represent your lifestyle.

2. Build your capsule wardrobe - based on your 3 categories, select the clothing that will make up your capsule wardrobe. Your capsule wardrobe should consist of items you love wearing and items that are useful in each of the outfit categories you’ve selected. I recommend 30 - 35 items for your capsule wardrobe. Many items will overlap and fit into multiple categories, which is great.

3. Organise your capsule wardrobe - Your capsule wardrobe should be easy to reach.
   

The aim is to first create a capsule wardrobe using items you already have. Hold off on going shopping for new items, the aim is to first create a capsule wardrobe with your current clothing. So challenge yourself to try new outfit combinations.

If you struggle with the initial number of items you, add more items.

Try to enjoy the process of building your capsule wardrobe - you could even make girls night of it. Invite your closest 2 friends, get some drinks, snacks and get them to help you pick the items.
